When tradition meets progress

Winery FJ Gritsch, Wachau, Austria

Nestled within the Austrian UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wachau, in the so-called ‘Gourmet Landscape’ between Melk and Krems, lies the exceptional and multi-award-winning FJ Gritsch Winery, now run by Franz-Josef Gritsch, the seventh generation of the family.

The estate was built as early as the 13th century and has been owned by the Gritsch family for over 200 years. Since then, this family of winemakers has successfully combined time-honored winemaking traditions with modern innovations.

This synergy is also reflected in the winery’s architecture: in 2022, the historic Mauritiushof was expanded with a modern addition housing a “wine experience center,” and in 2015, the Kalmuck Cellar was added.

The Mauritiushof Wine Experience offers tasting rooms, a tasting and display cellar, an event space, and a flexible kitchen to complement the culinary aspects of the wine experience. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of private tasting and cooking experiences, as well as the opportunity to treat yourself to a short getaway in beautiful vacation apartments with breathtaking views.

The perfect complement to this is the innovative kalmuck cellar, built using state-of-the-art technology. Here, as a further evolution of traditional Wachau wines, the winery produces excellent Gritsch single-vineyard wines as well as modern kalmuck wines – because the winemaker is convinced that top quality can only be achieved through continuous innovation.

It goes without saying, then, that Franz-Josef Gritsch also prioritizes quality and innovation when it comes to his tanks, and that numerous Speidel tanks – such as fermentation and storage tanks, multi-compartment tanks, and variable capacity tanks – are an integral part of his winery.

»Yes, we work hard, we always strive for the best, and we never compromise when it comes to quality.«

All of this – from hand-picking grapes in the steep terraced vineyards to selecting the right tanks for winemaking – demonstrates the winemaker’s passion and commitment to quality. He says with complete conviction: “Yes, we work hard, we always strive for the best, and we never compromise when it comes to quality.”
